The Need
In South Sudan, a girl is more likely to die giving birth than finish secondary school.
Every hour, mothers and babies lose their lives because there’s no trained midwife to help.
The country has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world – 1223 women die for every 100,000 births.
Most of these deaths are preventable. What’s missing is the training.
What We Do
We train the people who can save lives.
ELSSA Africa provides lifesaving healthcare training for midwives, nurses, doctors, and community workers in low-resource areas – starting in South Sudan.
Since 2013 to date ELSSA has trained 468 South Sudan health professionals – 125 doctors, 83 clinical officers and 260 midwives, including 17 midwifery tutors
